Sue Call

Sue Call moved to Mississippi from a lifetime in Oklahoma (with a short layover in Florida) just a few weeks ahead of Katrina. She is a member of Ocean Springs Art Association and the treasurer of the Co-op Gallery.
Educated in business, Sue is retired from 20 years in Health Care Administration.
Sue's art education comes from her mother, who was an artist, from research, and from several years of private lessons from artists that she admired. She took drawing lessons from a contemporary cubist, human figure drawing and color theory from a renowned portrait artist, and watercolor lessons from an award winning miniaturist.
Having painted only as a hobby over the years, when Sue retired she began to create memory pictures for friends and family. Her memory pictures are snapshots from stories told when people get together and reminisce.
Sue works mainly in pastels for the ease of mixing color quickly and the control of the medium. Many of her pictures of singers and music related themes are done with white conte' crayons on black background. She also uses graphite and charcoal to create portraits that tell a story. Sue uses a digital camera, her computer, Adobe PhotoShop and Jasc Paint Shop Pro to provide her reference materials.
Gourds are a recent addition to her art repertoire and are quickly becoming her favorite medium. Sue loves the challenge of relief carving on the hard wood-like surface. Most of the gourds featured in this show were grown in Mississippi; some were grown on her little farm just outside Biloxi. It takes at least 10 months to bring the gourd from seed to a dried and usable art support, but the creative potential is limitless.
